Friede Springer married the publisher Axel Springer in 1978 and became the main owner of the Axel Springer media company after his death in 1985. She has sat as deputy chair of its supervisory board and installed Mathias Döpfner as chief executive in 2002. In 2020 she transferred the voting rights of her remaining 22% stake to Döpfner.
