Nvidia's role as AI financier faces its first big test as CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN fall over 30% in October

Nvidia has backed AI cloud firms and OpenAI with guarantees worth hundreds of billions of dollars, and the slump in neocloud shares and bonds is now testing that strategy.

Nvidia's role as a financier of the AI buildout is facing its first major stress test as credit tightens for key partners, CNBC reported on 24 October. As of its July filing, Nvidia had $36 billion in off-balance-sheet backstops for AI cloud providers (neoclouds), plus a guarantee of up to $105 billion for chips, land and power at OpenAI's proposed 10-gigawatt data centre in Pike County, Ohio. In most of these deals Nvidia pays only if a participant defaults.Sources:1CNBC: Nvidia's role as AI financier faces first big test as neoclouds take market hit, CNBC, 24 October 2026 (source, opens in a new tab)

Shares of CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN, all in Nvidia's portfolio, are down at least 30% in October. The spread on CoreWeave's credit default swaps has passed 11%, generally seen as a distress level, and yields on its 2031 and 2032 notes topped 15%. CoreWeave has about $51.6 billion in total debt, and Nvidia has committed to buy up to $6.3 billion of its computing capacity if no other buyer is found.Sources:1CNBC: Nvidia's role as AI financier faces first big test as neoclouds take market hit, CNBC, 24 October 2026 (source, opens in a new tab)2CNBC: Turmoil hits AI buildout as neoclouds face pressure, credit risks mount and Solidigm pulls IPO, CNBC, 23 October 2026 (source, opens in a new tab)

Other Nvidia-backed providers have stumbled: Australia's Firmus withdrew its IPO plans this month, and Nscale and SB Energy have given no update on US listings filed in September. SK Hynix's Solidigm unit also cancelled its IPO this week. Nvidia's own shares are down 7.6% in October after a third straight weekly fall.Sources:1CNBC: Nvidia's role as AI financier faces first big test as neoclouds take market hit, CNBC, 24 October 2026 (source, opens in a new tab)2CNBC: Turmoil hits AI buildout as neoclouds face pressure, credit risks mount and Solidigm pulls IPO, CNBC, 23 October 2026 (source, opens in a new tab)

Chief executive Jensen Huang told CNBC at Nvidia's GTC conference in Berlin that demand for neoclouds is "off the charts" and that "there's a scarcity of capital", and said CoreWeave does not need Nvidia's backstop. David Trainer of New Constructs warned: "If the demand for compute doesn't meet these really super lofty expectations, we're going to have a problem."Sources:1CNBC: Nvidia's role as AI financier faces first big test as neoclouds take market hit, CNBC, 24 October 2026 (source, opens in a new tab)

Nvidia's August filing listed more than $500 billion in off-balance-sheet commitments, most maturing through fiscal 2029, and it has offered asset managers up to $125 billion in residual-value guarantees on GPU financing. Nvidia said in a quarterly filing that its AI cloud partners have strong demand but are constrained by the infrastructure needed to meet it.Sources:1CNBC: Nvidia's role as AI financier faces first big test as neoclouds take market hit, CNBC, 24 October 2026 (source, opens in a new tab)
